Microphone issues on Windows laptop

How to enable/disable or fix microphone issues on your DSA awarded Windows laptop.

Occasionally certain laptop will come with microphone issues where the microphone options have disappeared or do not work.

This could be caused by the microphone being disabled or a hardware issue.

To check if it is a hardware or software issue, it is best to begin by checking if the microphone can be seen in "Device Manager".

To do so, on your computer, search for "Device Manager":

When in Device Manager, navigate to "Sound, video and game controllers". The standard microphone should usually be labelled "Realtek(R) Audio":

If it appears here, this usually means it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue.

I would suggest right clicking it and updating the drivers for the microphone as an extra step.

Once identified if it is a software issue, you can check within the settings that it is toggled on.

Search for "sound settings" on the computer and a menu should then pop up.

Find the "All Sound Devices" within the menu.

Navigate to "Input devices" and select the microphone.

Under the "General" section, you should be able to see a button that either says "Allow" or "Don't Allow".

If it says "Allow", toggle it on, this should then get the microphone to work again.

If it is a hardware issue and these steps do not work, I would suggest getting in contact with technical support so that we can help you out.
