Most laptops these days have a USB-C port. These ports can sometimes run faulty and suddenly stop working. A USB-C port can intake charge, connect external monitors via a USB docking station and be used for a USB-C disk drive. If the port was to stop working as expected, and there is no visible signs of hardware damage, the recommended thing to do is perform a 'Static Charge Reset'.
A Static Charge Reset discharges any remaining static electricity that may be interfering with normal power and port behaviour. Newer laptops retain a small amount of residual charge in their circuits even if the device has been switched off. This residual charge could disrupt the usual behaviour of the USB-C controllers and the charging. Please follow the steps below the perform a static charge reset.
Steps to Perform a Static Charge Reset:
- Turn off the laptop completely
- Unplug the power adapter from the laptop
- If the laptop has a removable battery, remove it
- Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds. (The laptop may turn on and off during this time but it is to be expected.)
- Reinsert the battery(If using a laptop with a removable battery)
- Reconnect the power adapter
- Turn on the laptop (It may take longer than usual to power on completely, this is to be expected also.)
Once the laptop has been powered back on, try and connect something via the USB-C port. In most cases this will resolve any issues you were facing.
