How to Disable Online Search Results (Bing) for Faster, More Reliable Searching

This guide helps you turn off Windows 11’s online search features (Bing web results) inside the Start Menu. Disabling online search makes the Start Menu faster, smoother, and more responsive, especially on standard, entry‑level DSA laptops with limited memory or slower processors.

This change is safe, reversible, and does not affect your ability to search your own files, apps, or settings.

Why Disable Online Search?

Windows 11 blends local search with online results. This means every time you type in the Start Menu, Windows may try to:

• Contact Microsoft’s servers

• Download web suggestions

• Load online cards (news, shopping, ads)

• Process cloud content

On entry‑level laptops, this can cause:

• Slow or laggy Start Menu/system

• Delayed search results

• High CPU usage

• Stuttering or freezing

• Battery drain

Turning off online search removes this overhead and restores fast, offline searching.

Method 1 — Quick Toggle (Recommended for Most Students)

You can disable online search directly in Windows Settings:

1. Open Settings

2. Select Privacy & Security

3. Select Search Permissions

4. Find Cloud content search

5. Turn Web results → Off

Your Start Menu will now only show local results (apps, files, settings) and will respond more quickly.

Method 2 — Advanced Method (For Persistent Issues)

If the toggle does not stay off or your Windows edition does not show it, you can use a registry policy.

⚠️ Only use this if you are comfortable with basic Windows settings.

1. Press Windows Key + R

2. Type: regedit

3. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

4. Right‑click → New → DWORD (32‑bit) Value

5. Name it: DisableSearchBoxSuggestions

6. Set the value to: 1

7. Restart your laptop

This forces Windows to disable Bing web results and cloud suggestions.

How to Re‑Enable Online Search (Optional)

If you want online results again:

• Turn Web results back On in Settings or

• Delete the DisableSearchBoxSuggestions registry entry

Your laptop will return to the default behaviour.

Some students notice that the Windows 11 Start Menu search feels slow, doesn’t show results, or only works properly when the laptop is connected to the internet. This can happen on any laptop, including DSA‑supplied ones.

Why Windows 11 Search Tries to Use the Internet?

Windows 11 mixes your local apps with online results (Bing, Microsoft Store, cloud suggestions). This is the most common cause, if the connection is poor, or something gets in the way, it can cause slowdown/a failed search menu/stuck/crash etc.

If the laptop is offline or the connection is weak, the Start Menu may pause while it waits for online results. Or potentially not show at all.

Some programs, place themselves "in the chain" for search, if they/their servers have an issue, Windows start menu search is then affected.

Common signs:

• Search takes more than 5–20 seconds to respond

• “Working on it…” appears

• Search works instantly once Wi‑Fi is connected

Fix: Turn off online search as above, or , worst way use the below.

Why extra Manufacturer or other apps apps Can Slow Things Down

Some laptops come with extra software from HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc. These apps can slow down search or indexing.

Why University Accounts Can Add Restrictions

If you sign into Windows with a university Microsoft 365 account, the laptop may inherit university rules that affect search, or be "forced" to use a search from within the Uni systems/servers

Fix: Use a personal Microsoft or "Local" account for Windows itself, and only add your university account inside Office apps.

There are Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPS), Bloatware, Malware or Browser Add‑ons that can break Start Menu search.

If the laptop has unwanted software, search may freeze or crash.

Fix: Run a full malware scan

The all around Fix: A Full Clean Install (Not “Reset this PC”)

“Reset this PC” often keeps hidden problems, old drivers, or manufacturer software.

A full wipe + clean install gives the best results because it:

• Removes all bloatware

• Removes all university policies

• Removes all malware

• Rebuilds Windows from scratch

• Gives you a clean, fast system

🛠️ Troubleshooting

If your Start Menu still feels slow:

• Restart your laptop

• Ensure ALL Windows Updates have completed

• Close unused apps to free memory
  

• Install a better than Basic Anti Virus
  

• Check for low disk space (under 10% free can cause lag)

• Disable “Search Highlights” in Settings → Privacy & Security → Search
